Darth Maul's Saberstaff: The Weapon That Changed the Rules
Share
When Maul walked onto the Theed generator complex catwalks and ignited a second blade from the opposite end of his hilt, he was drawing on a form of Sith weapon that had been out of common use for a very long time. Sidious had trained him in it deliberately — Maul was built as a weapon, and his weapon was built to match.
The saberstaff is a double-length hilt housing two independent power cells, emitters and crystals, capable of running as a single blade or a spinning double. It demands enormous discipline; the failure mode is cutting your own leg off. Maul used it to fight two Jedi simultaneously and kill one of them, which was, at the time, unheard of.
Obi-Wan cut the staff in half on Naboo, and cut Maul in half shortly after. Neither stayed dead. Maul survived on Lotho Minor, was recovered by his brother, and eventually built a new saberstaff on Mandalore, which he used through his Shadow Collective years.
By the time he confronted Obi-Wan for the last time — on Tatooine, decades later, over a boy neither of them was going to get — Maul was down to a single-bladed hilt. The duel lasted a few seconds. Obi-Wan had seen every move before.
A full staff is a statement piece: two emitters, one continuous line, no wasted metal. shop sabers
