Kanan Jarrus's Lightsaber: A Weapon Built to Be Hidden
Share
Kanan Jarrus survived Order 66 as a fourteen-year-old Padawan named Caleb Dume, and then spent well over a decade not being found. His lightsaber is designed around that problem.
The hilt comes apart. It separates into two sections that, disassembled, read as unremarkable machined components rather than a Jedi weapon — the kind of thing that survives a cursory bag search on an Imperial world. He carried it in pieces for years, assembling it only when there was no alternative, which for a man working cargo runs and drinking his way across the Outer Rim was not often.
That's an unusual design brief. Most lightsabers are built for performance; this one is built for concealment first, and the two-piece construction costs structural rigidity to get it. It says more about the Purge than any account of the Purge does.
The blade ran blue. He lost the weapon on Malachor, and afterward — blinded in the confrontation with the Eighth Brother — built a replacement with a shorter, more angular hilt. Fighting without sight changed how he used it, and he became noticeably better afterward, which was not the outcome anyone expected.
Two-piece hilts remain one of the more interesting engineering problems in saber design. shop sabers
