Starkiller's Lightsaber and the Exposed Crystal Chamber (Legends)

Galen Marek was raised as a weapon, and his lightsabers were built to match the job he was given.

Taken as a child by Vader after the murder of his Jedi father, Marek was trained in secret as the Sith Lord's apprentice — hidden from Palpatine, and used to hunt down the surviving Jedi the Empire hadn't accounted for. He fought under the codename Starkiller, and for years he had no idea he was being kept as a piece in a longer game against his own master's master.

His hilt is unusually aggressive: a long body with an exposed crystal chamber that leaves the stone visible behind a cage of machined struts. Most designs shroud the crystal; Marek's puts it on display, which suits a weapon designed for a secret apprentice who was never expected to blend in with anyone.

The blade started red. When Marek turned — talked out of his conditioning by the people he'd been sent to kill, and by a Jedi Master who saw who he might have been — he changed the crystal, and the blade ran blue.

He died buying time for the Rebel leadership to escape the Death Star's construction site. In Legends, the Rebel Alliance's starbird insignia derives from his family crest.

Exposed crystal chambers are the most technically demanding thing on a hilt, and the most rewarding to look at. shop sabers
